A judge has temporarily halted proceedings in the case involving Donald Trump’s alleged interference in the 2020 election.
WASHINGTON − On Friday, U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan suspended all filing deadlines in the election interference case against Donald Trump as federal prosecutors worked on dropping the charges.
Chutkan’s ruling followed a statement from a Justice Department source this week, revealing that special counsel Jack Smith intended to close both of Trump’s federal cases due to the department’s policy prohibiting the prosecution of a sitting president.
In a filing on Friday, Smith stated, “The Government respectfully asks the Court to remove the remaining pretrial deadlines to give the Government time to evaluate this unprecedented situation and decide on the appropriate next steps in accordance with Department of Justice policy.”
The Trump campaign released a statement calling for the dismissal of the criminal cases against the president-elect.
“The American people have decisively re-elected President Trump with a clear mandate to Make America Great Again,” said Steven Cheung, a spokesperson for the campaign, in a statement.
